The initiative is a follow up to the last week’s debate about meat and health – after the World Health Organization (WHO) published a report stating that the consumption of processed meat and red meat can cause colon cancer.
– In most studies reported that people who eat lots of red meat and meat products, weigh more, are less physically active, eat less fiber, fruits and vegetables than those who eat little meat. They are also more often smokers and have a higher alcohol consumption, writes Nortura in a statement Thursday.
– There is therefore a possibility that high intake of meat and meat products is an indicator of a less health-friendly living that together increases the risk of getting bowel cancer, without the intake of red meat in itself is the direct cause of bowel cancer, it added.
The company – which is behind brands such as Prior and Gilde – concludes that it is needed much more research in the area of meat and cancer. (© NTB)
