Research casts doubt on drug prevention – NRK

It is Professor Henriette Kyrre Stad Power at Regional Centre for children and young people – Nord (RKBU North) behind the study.

She concluded that school-based programs generally have little to no effect on exposing youth alcohol debut. But they can work better in people with high alcohol consumption, she emphasizes.

It reports the University of Tromsø.

– Although such programs have little or no effect on the majority of youngsters, so they have a positive effect on those who report the highest alcohol consumption, says Kyrre Stad Power to forskning.no.

RKBU North in 2009 commissioned by the Health Directorate to evaluate the effectiveness of teaching program “Young and Rus» which was started in 2006.

The aim of the mandatory teaching is to strengthen students’ attitudes about alcohol use.

But Kyrre Stad Power found therefore that the remedial program little effect on the use of alcohol.

– The results showed, however, that a quarter of eighth graders had already started drinking alcohol at baseline. This may help to defend that there should be alcohol preventive measures in secondary schools, says Power to forskning.no.
