Oil spills damage seabirds Jæren – NRK

– There will very little oil before a bird dies. If the oil is slightly chewy stick it to the plumage and water penetration. Then lose the birds entire insulation and they freeze to death, says Knut Henrik Dagestad in Norwegian Nature (SNO).

This week SNO registered unusually many seabirds covered with oil. Wednesday was over thirty oil damaged birds recorded only by Håtangen in Ha.

– Some birds Heavily soiled, while others are less soiled. When they search for land. Most birds that are registered are species that live near the coast, and all indications are that the spill originated from an oil slick which is near the coast, explains caretaker.

Knut Henrik Dagestad in Norwegian Nature Inspectorate says that an unusual number of seabirds are registered with oil spills along Jæren. Now they want SNO tips from the public to find the source of the spill.

Dagestad says that reports of oil damaged birds ranging from Brusand in the south, to Revtangen in the north. Species that fish gulls, herring gulls, eiders, long-tailed ducks, female ducks and grave ends are affected.

– The oil looks very thick and black out. It may be discharges from boats, either waste oil or bunker oil.

The NCA has been looking for the source of the spill by plane, but no luck. Now ask SNO people who observe oil spills to contact either them or by calling fire and rescue center at 110.

For the birds affected by oil spills, the prognosis poor.

– For now we have not found dead birds, but most of which are collected, door, says Dagestad.
