360 degrees on YouTube – digi.no

Friday last week opened YouTube for uploading and playback of 360 degrees video, ie video where the user can see in different directions. Videos are filmed with special composite cameras filming in all directions at once. Not so different from what one knows from Google Street View cars, but with video instead of stills.

Such videos are in themselves nothing new. Among other things, our sister site, Technical Magazine, published such 360 video from a cable car in Svalbard. But support from YouTube will undoubtedly contribute to increased awareness and interest in this type of videos.

YouTube solution is currently quite limited. Among other works currently only in Chrome and YouTube app for Android. In Chrome, users can mix and match the image using mouse or keys WASD. In Android app controlled direction in the video of how to hold the smart phone or tablet.

The videos can be created in several different ways. Currently there are four different cameras that are directly compatible with YouTube. They are listed on this page.
