Ten years ago established Rolls-Royce with the two units a research center for a unique model in Norway.
The partnership on development of maritime high technology has been a success coming both academia and the Norwegian maritime industry as a whole. Tuesday May 12, the parties signed a renewal of the agreement.
– This is a rare close cooperation between market considerations and where we as a company not only contribute money but also participating in the research project, says research director Rune Garen by Rolls-Royce Marine in Norway. The center conducts research on hydrodynamics and how a ship should be built to handle harsh weather.
The research follows a model that Rolls-Royce has developed cooperation with universities worldwide: Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre (UTC) . This is the only center of its kind in Norway, and one of two in the Nordic region. Also the Technical University Chalmers in Gothenburg has a UTC. Rolls-Royce has established a total of 31 such laboratories around the world.
The partnership is funded by Rolls-Royce by 25-40 percent depending on the number of ongoing projects, and also receives good support from MAROFF program to Norway Research. Seven researchers and four doctoral students attached to the center today.
The budget of UTC for the decade 2005-2014 was 132 million, of which Rolls-Royce contributed 57 million kroner. The cost framework and distribution is expected to remain at the same level in the future.
Rolls-Royce is more than a financial supporter, and takes an active role in research and researchers are contributing to real value for one of the important industrial clusters: The maritime.
– This is a good example of how research and development contributes to the development of strong industrial clusters. The purpose of cooperation in Trondheim is to strengthen research that is strategically important for Rolls-Royce with potential for commercialization, says Rune Garen who daily have their workplace in western Norway.
