Moralistic about surrogacy – Dagbladet.no

A large majority in Biotechnology Council believes surrogacy should remain prohibited. In addition, the Norwegians that bypass the law by going abroad is punishable even if it takes place in legal and voluntary forms.

Biotechnology Council is an independent body that will advise the government and help to raise the quality of the public discourse about bioethical issues.

The inadequately explained statement about surrogacy is an example of the series which shows that the Council has some way to go before it fulfills its role in a satisfactory manner.

Even the Biotechnology Council states that children’s best interests and concern for the surrogate mother is motivating for the proposal, the proposals in violation of these considerations.

The research is namely clear that children born by surrogate mother does not have a poorer growth than other children . What puts children in a difficult situation, however, rules that the Biotechnology Council proposes. They give children born to surrogate a precarious legal position at the start of life.

The interests of women are not better justified. It follows in a long and very proud tradition, where women are deemed not to know “their own good and needs to be protected against themselves,” as the minority noted the last time the Council considered the matter.

Rather than prevent women from making the wrong choice by depriving them option, one would think that a thoughtful and woman-friendly legislation would safeguard their interests in a better way.

It has a majority in the so-called Youth bioteknologiråd, which consisted of over 1,000 candidates from 17 provinces, understood. They want to legalize surrogacy.

Rather than tightening regulations here at home, the Norwegian authorities should remove the ban on altruistic surrogacy and support the important international work being done to harmonize regulations for the benefit of all parties.
