The study from the University of Edinburgh shows that use of the painkiller for a week or longer may impair the development of testosterone by 45 percent in male fetuses. The study was published by Science Translational Medicine and first featured in the online newspaper.
It has long been suspected that low levels of testosterone have been the cause of disorders such as testicular cancer and sterility.
The study is attracting attention a number of international media. Paracetamol has previously been considered safe to use during pregnancy. Further studies are needed to find out how much paracetamol over how long that do not lead to a reduction in hormone levels.
