With a long, narrow and pointed hull and two stabilizing side hull has marine and industrial designers envisioned a spectacular and quick trip along the coast for up to 180 passengers.
– The concept is based on the technology available. It can be built now, says Petter Martens to TU. He is head of “Small Craft Design” in Eker Sandvik on Stord.
Long, narrow, fast
The concept is called Cuts. The idea is that the speedboat to “splitting” the sea with its 60 meters long and 13.5 meters wide hull. The main hull is however only 3 meters.
The vessel constructed for maximum speed of 50 knots, with an average speed of 45 knots.
The journey time from London to Trondheim with eight stops along the way, is estimated at 10 hours and 49 minutes.

Need ship tunnel
The vessel shall according Eker Sandvik preliminary calculations withstand wave heights of 3-4 meters.
– Most ruta will go inshore, but is dependent on the Stad ship tunnel is ready, says Martens.
Design company developed Cuts for a challenge from Express Association (HRF). Stad ship tunnel will open up new transport opportunities along the coast, including commuter traffic between regions that today are physically separated.
High Speed Connection is currently impossible round Stad.
Lower fuel use
Despite a speed of as much as 50 knots, a 40 meter long “Cuts” could carry 180 passengers with 30 percent lower fuel consumption than a 30 meter long traditional catamaran that goes 30 knots.
– This calculation is based on certain assumptions, but gives an indication that this hull is environmentally highly beneficial, even with traditional MTU engines and tiltable surface cutting propellers, says Martens.

Froude
He explains that favorable fuel math with the long, narrow hull.
– We extend hull of the whole 60 meters . Then we have a Froude number of just over 1, says Martens. Froude number says something about the relationship between length and speed, and should not be much over 1.
– Should we have an even more environmentally friendly vessel, we could imagine other fuels types, such as hydrogen. But what it means for weight and reach, we have not counted on, says Martens.
The concept is not material mentioned but speedboats in carbon have much lower weight than aluminum.
Service that the plane
Interior wise aviation industry source of inspiration.
– We imagine that it assumes will be easier seats for those who will travel card, while further behind is more comfort as more similar to business class for the far travelers, says Martens.
For the embarkation and disembarkation should go quickly, the idea that it should go in parallel, for example, with boarding on starboard and egress port.
Heavy suitcases handled aft, while carry-ons placed in overhead luggage compartments. Kiosk replaced by service by cabin crew.

Alternative
– This can be a wonderful journey with large panoramic windows where you see western scenery glide by, says Martens.
If the Stavanger Trondheim becomes a reality, we require a fleet of about 10 vessels to secure a number of departures that make the option attractive.
– The Few will travel the entire route, there are not a competitor for flights between Stavanger and Trondheim, think Martens.
Viewing possibilities
Eker Sandvik has not taken charge of the concept.
– We took it as a challenge. We can use this as a starting point for other projects. We wanted to show fast shipping companies and others what is possible. It is not certain Cuts will go on this stretch, it may go between other cities and places along the coast of Norway or other countries, says Martens.
