Now is Telia a technology company creates its own Internet of things – ITavisen.en

the First commercial platform based on the “Narrow Band”.

It was in march of this year that we most recently was with Telia to get us one of their press conferences. The time, it turned out that NetCom would be Telia, and that they launched the new plans. Not exactly very exciting, but relevant for anyone.

So when Telia called and asked if we would come and look at what they were supposed to present yesterday so there wasn’t any automatics in that we put the time to it. After all, it is limited what one can expect news from a provider of mobile services? The thought in any case yours truly, but fortunately showed Telia that the innovation is not dead in Norway.

Dear child has difficult names
Narrow Band Internet of Things, or the NB-IoT as it is abbreviated to, is the technology that is the basis for the platform Telia now has built in cooperation with, among others, Huawei.

NB-IoT is a “Low Power Wide Area(LPWA) technology that is designed specifically to have very good penetrating coverage and thus be able to reach the devices in both indoor and outdoor or under the ground. Narrow Band also has very low power consumption that provides up to 10 year battery life for certain applications, according to Telia.

the Advantage with the NB-IoT is that it can be rolled out in existing 4G networks. But it can also be used in the own spectrum of these are available, both in LTE, even as GSM network. With own EN-IoT chips then communicate parkeringssensoren, or the coffee maker via Telias network and out to the service providers and users.

Telia, a modern technology company
the Press conference was preceded by the managing director in Telia Norge, Abraham Foss, who talked about the history of Telia to be the first out with the technologies. Among other things, was the first to launch 4G in 2009, and 4.5 G in 2015 and now the NB-IoT in 2016.

– This marks the first step in a journey of Telia from a pure mobile company to be a modern technology company that facilitates the capture of the society, ” said Foss from the podium.

There is a very clear trend in recent years that most in our everyday life to be connected to the internet. Different forecasts for the number of units that are going to be taken into the Internet of Things vary greatly, and no one knows for sure. But what is certain is that there is talk about huge numbers. Between 20 to 50 billion devices by 2020 provides a good indication and a good space to work on how the future will look like.

Ms. Kristine Meek in Telenor Norway also says that through their “Smart Municipality” concept works with over 100 municipalities in order to capture different areas within the welfare, environment and transport. Areas where this technology is going to be very relevant to the future”.

– We shall be with to arrange
the Government was also present, represented by the secretary of state Reynir Jóhannesson (FrP / Ministry of transport and communications), to talk a little bit about the government’s thoughts around the technological development. He described Telia as a driving force in technology and pointed out how important the government’s role as facilitator.

” We from the government side should be good partners, and we have spent a lot of time last year travelling around the world and talk with Norwegian and international players and have heard from what the authorities must do in order for these companies to succeed. We shall be with to arrange of the regelverkssiden and to facilitate that the mobile sector will get more frequencies. We shall re-arrange so that the mobile will get more, and it must happen faster than what one might thought before, ” says Jóhannesson to the assembly during the press conference.

Jóhannesson also adds that the government’s aim to remove the barriers that exist and adapt the policy for self-driving cars, boats and drones. And that this has been a goal over a longer time.

a Short way from idea to market
As part of the presentation had Telia not only with Huawei to tell about their alliance to get this in place, but also two smaller Norwegian actors who both had built commercial products based on Telias new platform.

7Sense was one of the commercial actors who presented their product, a world-launch of a device that lets farmers monitor the vanningsmaskiner to avoid over and under-watering as well as accidents as a result of errors with the equipment. Max J. tangen, CEO of 7Sense be able to tell about a journey of 6 months from the collaboration started until they had a product ready for sale.

APX Systems is another company that Telia presented, they have developed a sensor for “smart spaces”. The solution to the APX works by drilling a hole in the asphalt and put down a sensor that measures changes in its magnetic field and reports it back to the company’s systems. Which in turn use this information in an app to give an overview of available parking spaces. This will again lead to less pollution since the time it takes to look for parking allowed to shorten drastically down.

Jan Erik Evanger from APX showed us a short demo, also the built in Lego. And yes, the technology works, the car is taken away so is the space available. And you can see it in the app. Just for the APX, it is still in the early phase, and Evanger could tell that the collaboration with Telia started only a month ago and that the last update to the app came the same day as the announcement.

He could tell about a very good cooperation with Telia, which has provided large resources at their disposal to help them to commercialize the solution, which is based on the NB-IoT-platform. They have as of today a pilot walking together with Telia.

To make your everyday life easier
CTO of Telia, Jon Christian Hillestad, started to say that “IoT is not about things or the Internet. It’s about making everyday life easier” and then went on to mention examples like parking, lawn, street lighting and how the Internet of Things will be to build companies and make the more effective.

One of the main points he pulled out during his part of the presentation was that Telia is totally dependent on a steady stream of partners who want to develop solutions with their platform in the bottom. To reach that goal they use a self developed platform, with APIS that make it easy for small companies and startups to get quickly started and getting quickly to market with their products.

An ecosystem with open API
An IoT solution will need not only access to the Internet. In order to deliver a solution to the market, one must be able to manage the identity of users of their safe handling of the data and a form of unit-treatment. All of this offers Telia in its solution, and you can already get started via their developer portal, the developer.telia.io.

– NB-IoT opens up many new application areas, and with the use of this technology and our proprietary platform, we can now connect multiple devices to the Internet of things and develop exciting commercial solutions with partners, ” said Hillestad.

Purple Nerds
Telias own geek brigade, Purple Nerds, was also there. The name came as an internal thing in front of the Java Zone but has now become more tangible. Among other things, they have made the model that Telia is used to illustrate how the EN-IoT works in practice and how many sides of the community can be automated to make life easier.

Model-town, which was built in Lego, showed in all 9 sensors on train tracks, søppelkasser, bysykler, parking spaces, and various weather data. We could move the cars and immediately see how the data moves from the sensor to the sky, and to the app. The model showed how a platform such as Telias can be with to build future solutions, and contribute to a further digitization of the society we live in.

For example, smart søppelkasser help renovasjonsetaten to retrieve the garbage where it is needed, when it is needed and make smarter kjøreplaner.

One of the purple nerds could also tell us that they take their own medicine when it comes to the IoT. They have in fact installed sensors on the loo, so that bomturer to the locked door is no longer a problem.

Telenor is not on the latsiden
Although Telia is first to market with a commercial NB-IoT so, Telenor has for a long time worked with the same teknlogien. Back in October last year announced a collaboration with Huawei and Q-Free to run a pilot project with smart-parking in Trondheim. The plan is that the pilot will start in January next year.

questions from ITavisen about what the status is so answering Kristine Meek, head of communications at Telenor Norway that “We have already turned on the NB-IoT in the Telenor network and we will actually make a test with parkeringssensorer here in the morning. We have worked with the NB-IoT for a long time together with selected customers, partners and oems”.

Further adds Meek that “We already notice the great demand for the technology, which in particular is characterized by long battery life, better coverage and lower investment costs”.

And it is here that Telia has arrived first come, first served, with its commercial NB-IoT platform to facilitate the for entrepreneurs, startups and other partners can use their platform for communication with their products within the Internet of Things.

Then we’ll see what happens beyond 2017 while Telia is continuing the rollout of its platform and Telenor launches its.
