Many people have claimed that World War II in northern Norway has been poorly lit, almost a forgotten part of Norway’s military history. It will now be dealt with when the University of Tromsø embark on a five-year research project focusing on just war in the north.
Thursday afternoon was namely clear that the Research Council gives NOK 19.6 million to war research at the University of Tromso.
– The war in the north was different than the war in the south, and the story of what happened and the crucial role northern front had the outcome of the war in Europe, deserves to be better elucidated also in the national narrative about World War II, says Fredrik Fagertun, head of the Institute of history and Religious Studies at the university of Tromsø to the university homepage.
Bergensener and generous billionaire Trond Mohn contributes four million to the project.
– Trond Mohn is pleased to contribute to this important work. He believes that what happened in the north deserves much more space in a national context, says Kjell Kolbeinsen, director of Tromsø Research Foundation and friend of Trond Mohn.
The work is already underway, and institute Fagertun tells the Universities website that the five years gives the story of the war in the north in book form.
