Wikipedia will provide Google search contest – ITavisen.no

Focusing millions.

According to reports from The Register planning Wikimedia, the foundation behind Wikipedia, doing service to something more than an encyclopedia.

Google challenger
the foundation will spend 21 million to launch its own search engine to take up arms against mainly Google, but other search engines like Bing. (According to figures from Netmarketshare Google has a global market share of 65.44 percent, Bing has 15.82 while Chinese Baidu has 8.3 percent.)

The confirmation comes from American Knight Foundation in the form of a grant.

“in order to promote new models for information by supporting the first step in the development of the Wikipedia Knowledge Engine, a system to find credible and reliable information on the Internet” writes the foundation.

Wikia flop
Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales has previously denied that they are planning a search engine, and as recently as last week dismissed his reputation that Wikipedia would challenge Google.

Based on the documents the Registry has now published, shows that Wikipedia began development in September.

This is not the first time Wikipedia tries in the search engine industry. In 2008 we launched Wales Engine Wikia, but it never became a success.
