While Nokia career, they introduced a proprietary 2.5 mm audio connector on their phones.
D-shaped
introduction never appeared to be a good idea, and the company eventually went back to the industry standard that is 3.5 mm.
A new patent from Apple, Patent 9,142,925, indicating that Apple sees an opportunities to launch a new D-shaped 2.5 mm audio jack. This could possibly be a part of making iPhone and iPad even thinner, but will most likely be a bad solution for consumers.

Proprietary solutions
By introducing a “new” audio connection will make the current headset unusable, or may require an adapter to use them. Apple is known for using proprietary connectors in their iOS devices and Apple live well by selling adapters for them.
It has also previously been rumored that Apple was planning to introduce Lightning connector in headset.
A smart choice?
company is not religious when it comes to dimensions.
