Encourages people to collect bear poop – OBI Online

– We encourage anyone who is outdoors in autumn, to pick up droppings and hair of bear and deliver them to the Norwegian Nature Inspectorate in the area. We analyze samples for DNA and learns more about the bear and how many people live in the country, says leader Jonas Kindberg in Rovdata.

The analyzes can partly say something about the bear’s identity and gender it has. The findings can be linked to where and when the same bears are observed earlier.

you pick wisely
If you participate in the collection, you must set prepared.

– For sure we will manage to get out of DNA samples, it is important that they are not contaminated, which means that they contain DNA from other than the bear. Therefore, avoid touching the droppings. Turn either a plastic bag inside out and pick up a portion of their faeces. Turn then record over shit, tie again and wrap it in the bag, explaining Kindberg.

When you arrive home the sample should be stored cool, preferably in frozen state.
