Better performance is important enhancement
There are not very many new features, but the OS is noticeably quick on older machinery and MacBook 2015 which was certainly not have as much power to spend, but running OS X 10.11 lot better than its predecessor.

Facebooks downtime sent traffic aloft – Campaign

De er funnet flere steder på planeten, og dukker opp når overflatetemperaturen stiger over minus 23 grader celsius. Når det blir kaldere forsvinner de igjen.

Flytende vann er regnet som en helt avgjørende komponent for muligheten for livsformer. Letingen etter liv på Mars vil intensiveres i årene som kommer.

Gammel teori – nye fakta

Teorien om stripene virkelig er flytende vann er ikke av ny dato, men funnene er nå bekreftet av nye bilder fra NASA’s sonde Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO). Det er analyser av saltforbindelser på overflaten når vannutsondringen er på sitt største som nå oppfattes som bekreftelse på at dette virkelig er flytende vann. Saltforbindelsene bidrar til å senke frysepunktet for vann betydelig.

Det er Lujendra Ojha ved Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) i Atlanta, som har fulgt opp de funnene han allerede som student i 2010 trodde måtte vise at det virkelig fantes flytende vann på den røde planeten.

– Vi sier ikke at vi har funnet det endelige bevis på flytende vann, men vi har funnet hydrerte salter, sier Ojha. NASA synes imidlertid ikke å være i tvil.

Mars – vår mystiske nabo i solsystemet

Mars er Jordens nabo på yttersiden i retning fra Solen. Planetens diameter er omtrent halvparten av Jorden, og fordi overflaten er farget nesten rustrød på grunn av jernoksid på overflaten, kalles Mars for den røde planeten.

Men en gang var Mars blå. For omkring fire milliarder år siden hadde den unge planeten vann nok til å dekke hele overflaten med et ca. 140 meter dypt globalt hav. Mer sannsynlig er det likevel at vannet samlet seg i et hav som dekket nesten halvparten av Mars’ nordlige halvkule, med en dybde på over 1,6 kilometer i enkelte områder.

Fant bare en gold og livløs planet

Da de første sondene ble sendt til Mars i midten av 1960-årene raste de forbi uten å lande. Kameraene var rettet mot overflaten. Men vann var ikke lenger å se. Planeten virket fullstendig tørr og livløs, bortsett fra polområdene som helt tydelig hadde hvite kapper vinterstid, farget av et tynt lag av karbondioksid, eller tørris.

Ett tiår senere landet de to amerikanske Viking-sondene på Mars. De sendte hjem oppsiktsvekkende gode overflatebilder, men bekreftet det golde, øde landskapet. Fortsatt tørt. Fortsatt livløst.

Så fant de tegn på en våtere Mars

Håpet om rennende vann levde imidlertid videre hos forskerne. Kunne man bare finne vann, var det også gnist i tanken om livsformer på planeten. Og man fant:

Sonden Mars Express Orbiter målte polkappene fra sitt omløp rundt planeten i mars 2004, og fant at polisen består av 85 prosent karbondioksid, men også av 15 prosent vann. Dessuten:

• Marsroveren Spirit, som landet på Mars i januar 2004, ga håpet om å finne rennende vann på Mars en nytt løft. I 2007 samlet roveren inn kjemiske forbindelser som også inneholdt vannmolekyler.
• Året etter støtte Mars-landeren Phenix på is under overflaten nær grensen mot polområdet i nord.
• Sonder i omløp har gang på gang fotografert formasjoner og strukturer som synes å ha vært formet av rennende vann.

Det er funnet over 60 Mars-meteoritter på Jorden. Flere av dem har bevis på å være utsatt for vann en gang i tiden. Og videre:

• Roveren Curiosity har funnet elveløp og terreng formet av rennende vann.
• Sonden Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter har fotografert det som kan synes å være grunnvann som smelter og renner ned skråninger i formasjoner nær planetens ekvator i sommermånedene. Det er disse funnene som ble bekreftet mandag.

«Marsboerne invaderer oss»

I 1938  skulle et hørespill i radioen utløse panikk i store byer i USA. Den kjente dramatikeren Orson Welles sendte en radioversjon av den engelske forfatteren H. G. Wells fortelling fra 1897, «The War of the Worlds». Det førte til massehysteri blant lyttere i USA. De trodde at en invasjon fra Mars var i full gang.

Slik var det altså ikke. Og ikke er det funnet bevis for livsformer på Mars, tross ganske mange landinger der.

Trodde Viking fant liv på Mars

I 1976 gjorde en av de to Viking-sondene som den hadde fått ordre om fra Jorden. Den plukket opp en jordprøve fra bakken, og førte den inn i et lite kammer der den ble tilført noen dråper vann. Tanken var at eventuelle livsformer ville absorbere vannet og gi fra seg enten karbondioksid eller metangass. Og – utrolig nok – en detektor bekreftet at dette skjedde.

Forskernes puls gikk rett til værs. Men forsøket kunne ikke bekreftes. Til slutt ble det forklart som en feil, eller at det kan ha vært jordisk forurensning som utløste alarmen. Likevel ligger tvilen der fortsatt, senest i 2012 ble historien løftet frem igjen av forskere som fortsatt holdt muligheten åpen for at forsøket viste et genuint resultat, og altså tegn på livsformer på Mars.

Metan – men langt fra nok metan?

Metan i atmosfæren på Jorden er i stor grad frigjort av ulike livsformer på bakken. På Jorden dannes metan av bakterier som bruker hydrogen og karbondioksid som råmaterialer. Derfor ga det et betydelig løft til troen på at det kan finnes, eller nylig har vært, livsformer på Mars da både sonder i bane rundt den røde planeten og teleskoper på Jorden tidligere påviste metan i den tynne atmosfæren også på vår naboplanet.

I november 2013 fikk forventningene et skudd for baugen. Roveren «Curiosity» som landet på Mars i august i august 2012 har som hovedoppgave å lete etter  forutsetninger for liv på planeten. Men analyser som nå er publisert i magasinet Science viser at «Curiosity»  ikke har kunnet påvise på langt nær de forekomstene av metan som man hadde forventet på bakkenivå.

Jakten på liv fortsetter på Mars

Både de to aktive roverne på Mars, Opportunity og Curiosity, vil fortsette med eksperimenter for å søke etter mulige tidligere eller nåværende livsformer på Mars. I tillegg vil planlagte sonder og rovere bli utstyrt med instrumenter for å fortsette letingen.

I 2018 planlegger ESA å skyte opp sin første rover til Mars; ExoMars vil være istand til å kunne bore to meter ned i jordsmonnet på jakt etter organiske molekyler.

NASAs neste rover, kalt Mars 2020, vil sendes av gårde om fem år – og vil ha nettopp jakten på liv som en av hovedoppgavene.

The researcher is out of money – Beautiful weather

Cecilie Gjerde from Vikedal received NOK 25,000 in travel vouchers when she won Researcher Grand Prix this weekend.

Vindafjord: Cecilie Gjerde from Vikedal is a specialist in oral surgery and have researched their way to use stem cells to build a new jaw bone in people who have lost their teeth . She is part of a research group at the University of Bergen.

Under Researcher Grand Prix at the weekend she went to the top. She now hopes hype can lead to more money for research group.

– The main thing was to make research known. Now we have no more money and need financing. I hope that someone sees the potential that we may put Norway on the world map, says Gjerde to Radio 102. The whole interview you can hear here.

Etnebu familiar with stem cell research – Beautiful weather

Cecilie G. Fencing is a PhD candidate at the University of Bergen and went all the way in Saturday’s final in Researcher Grand Prix with his stem cell research.

TRONDHEIM: The finals took place on Byscenen in Trondheim. The winner talked about how she uses stem cells to build new jaw bone.

Is “3D Touch” as good as everyone claims?

Having bungled with activation in our US telecom operator Sprint for several hours (it should be said that I also had some blame for this), I could finally start up iOS 9 on the new model.

Design
6 s Plus weighs a little more than 6 Plus, actually “whole” 11 percent, but it sounds more than it feels like. There’s nothing to think about.

The design is not only unchanged, but it looks absolutely spitting image out (except that the CE marking, and other boring details that were previously looking at the back – now this is only to be found in iOS and the carton), although 6s also is a bit fatter to accommodate the new 3D Touch panel.

Fortunately, this year’s model reinforced with 7000 series aluminum known from Apple Watch so this year I certainly will not have things like this – this article bode well).

I’m looking forward to iPhone 7 for a reason: Design.

Look at the last and current generation is lackluster and boring, besides antenna stripes on the back still as ugly as ever.

iPhone 6 design is not as precise and elegant as the iPhone 4 and 5, I mean now. What do you mean?

Performance
It performs much better than iPhone 6, it marked from the first touch (being A10 Apple’s first CPU drag around a MacBook? It is actually possible now).

This is thanks to more RAM and a much faster CPU. Actual performance is better than MacBook (the Intel Core M) in standard version when measuring with Geekbench. That said, next year and A10 can be very interesting.

Good enough reason alone to upgrade? Almost.

Battery
battery is slightly smaller this year to accommodate 3D Touch (while being mobile little thicker). It means that mobile die earlier? Hardly, according to many reviews of mobile in the American press. Why? Because iOS 9 is more energy efficient.

It would be great with more mAh, yet it takes the little bit shorter time to charge 6s and 6s Plus. Charging time is not a trifle.

3D Touch
It surprised us that it takes a little longer than I thought to get used to deep touch, ie 3D Touch. The first hour I ended up having to activate 3D Touch although I really just wanted to move around the app.

I think this feature is going to save us a lot of time. That we do not have to press the home button twice to bring up last used apps is gold itself.

3D Touch works much like right mouse click from the home screen, but only with applications that support it (it already exists a good deal, as summarized by 9to5Mac).

I’ll have more to say about the new touch technology in the full review that comes when we feel us sure about what we want to say about Apple’s latest smartphone.

Moreover, it has the also better camera (up from 8 to 12MP and with support for 4K), and an even quicker Touch ID (now reading it themselves up almost just by looking at it).

PS: I acted Plus model with Apple’s new leather cover. If you do not have particular needs that extra screen protection, feels this good in the hand and does not take too much extra space.

A smart choice?
