The night’s big Tesla news revealed – Hegnar Online

Tesla believes self-driving cars will play a crucial role in improving security and accelerate the world’s transition to a sustainable future.

“Full autonomy will allow a Tesla to be significantly safer than a human driver, lowering the cost of transport for those who own a car, and provide affordable mobility on request for those who do not own a car,” writes elbilprodusenten in a message.

“We are proud to be able to report that as of today all the cars that are produced in our factory, including Model 3, the hardware needed for fully self-driving capability at a level substantially higher than a human driver. Eight surround cameras provide 360-degree vision around the vehicle with up to 250 metre range. Twelve updated ultrasonic sensors complement this, and lets the car recognize both hard and soft objects closer to twice as far away as the previous system. A forward pointing radar with enhanced processing adds further data about the world on a redundant wavelength, and can see through heavy rain, fog, dust, and even the car in front of you”, it’s called.

to process all of this information has the car got a new computer on board that is 40 times more powerful than the previous generation. It’s running Tesla’s proprietary “neuralnett” for the processing of the vision, sonar and radar. Look this system the world in a way that a driver alone cannot achieve. The system looks in all directions at the same time and on the wavelengths that go far beyond the human senses.

the Model S and Model X with this new hardware is already in production. But it is not activated yet:

“Before the activation of the functionality enabled by the new hardware, we will calibrate the system through millions of miles with kjøredata from the real world to make powerful improvements of both security and convenience. While this process will Tesla vehicles with the new hardware temporarily lack some of the features that today are available on the Tesla vehicles with the first generation Autopilot hardware, including some security features such as automatic emergency braking, collision warning, feltholder and active cruise control. As these features are validated in a robust manner, we will activate them wirelessly, together with a rapidly growing set of completely new features. As always, our wireless updates keep our customers at the forefront with new technology, and continue to do every Tesla, including those with first-generation Autopilot hardware, more capable over time,” writes Tesla.
