Kylo Clean and Darth Vader in the same room with us? We could feel fanboy-our hearts almost explode. As if that were not enough, we should get to play Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and talk about it with Tim Wileman (Producer) and Graham Goring (Author). Required. Try. To hold. Expectations. I. Chess.
It all started with a 30 minute presentation, where Goring played through the two missions we would be playing later. “With so many Star Wars fans in the studio, we had no trouble filling the game with tiny details and easter eggs,” said Goring as he refers to Luggabeast et their movements and raiders who basks in the background while they are waiting to spawn . There is no doubt that Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens looks pretty, and offers a variety of details many will not notice even. As Star Wars fans we took ourselves to laugh out loud when we got to see some of TT Fusion’s humorous interpretation of scenes from the film and small nods to other classical things in the Star Wars universe. With 200 playable characters and 40 vehicles / creatures will probably most find their favorites in the game. Then a character for five seconds in The Force Awakens chances are very high that they do not get to see the game in one way or another. Even the characters from the other films and other media will be in the game. A lot of good for the fans here then, but the game should offer more than Star Wars candy. What about the gameplay?
Lego games are constantly improving. They make infrequent huge leap, but just enough that the youngest are not overtaken by innovations. This is obviously not an exception. The core of the combat system is still the same. Press slåknappen to enemies crashing (host dies host). We will, however, also a new element. By health meter, there are now a meter that fills up as you continue to fight. Use this before it is full you will make an extra strong attack that kills a normal enemy in one fell swoop. Waiting on the other hand until it is full, you could do a super attack that kills all enemies in a wide area. There is a fine mechanics giving his little extra variety.
We also take part in “blaster battles”. This is essentially coverage based shooters, and it allows the developer to embed cinematic events. During a scene from closer to the end of the film you can see X-Wings crash land, big explosions and so on as you battle from behind cover. However, it will not be the same every time, for both you and the enemy can build turrets on the battlefield, destroy each other’s cover and the like which changes the premises.
Among the more notable upgrades we find construction. How often can you really only build one thing from really lego? Never, and this has TT Fusion also realized thus developed system multi build. With this system you can build a variety of different things depending on the situation you are in. It is also possible to tear it down and build something else if you change your mind. In our audition we had to build and use things in a certain order to solve a puzzle, and this was more challenging than before. Here indeed TT Fusion sought out something that can stimulate puzzle-solvers over 12 years, and we like that.
Since the developer has taken some artistic liberties it took not long from the time we met BB8 to flying the Millennium Falcon, and control in the air is much better this time. To begin with, we should escape Jakku, and this sequence was more arcade-like with limited movement. Here we also found several challenges to undertake, and it can certainly help to increase replay value. Although we were not punished to die, so it was still exciting to destroy four bridges while avoiding enemy laser elves.
The improvements became more visible in the second part of flying when we would take out 15 TIE fighters (relax, only two pieces did not want posed weird game). Finally we realized how quickly Falcon was. Without hesitation, and with deadly precision, we took loops, half loops and plunge as simple as that. Here also plays meter “Special” in and when this is complete you can mark and take out multiple enemies simultaneously. Unfortunately we did not see this as Goring failed twice in a row. It will probably be easier in co-op, for which you can share flying and shooting at two players.
Wileman and Goring talked much about keeping it real and polished, and it was easy to look at the product that it was true. For although the gameplay is largely the same as in previous Lego games, so is humor and level of detail is top notch. It’s hard to keep the smile back in the face of Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Fans will also see that the text scrolls across the screen before each mission has the right font, hear the actors read into additional lines for the new missions, and of course John Williams’ gorgeous music. TT Fusion continues to add small improvements, but it is hardly enough for those tired of Lego games. Like however both Lego and Star Wars, then this is definitely worth keeping an eye on.
