New Norwegian research: Fewer die from breast cancer if they are screened – Aftenposten

Research has evaluated the system of mammography screening ; Mortality reduced by 20 to 30 percent. There are as many as the health authorities wanted when the offer was introduced.

– We believe the documentation is so good that the scheme should be extended to women between 45 and 75 years, said Secretary General of the Cancer Society, Anne Lise Ryel .

Anne Lise Ryel even had breast cancer ten years ago. After a time of turmoil, she was sent to mammography. Every two years ago when the Secretary General has even been to this routine control.

Screening Programme is now being evaluated. The conclusion is that the target of 30 per cent lower mortality from breast cancer almost been reached.

It is the Research Council was commissioned by the Ministry of Health has conducted a research-based evaluation of the Mammography program.

The report is submitted to the Research Council’s website.

controversial screening

Screening Programme has been controversial because it has meant that some women are treated even if they are not sick. Politicians and health staff have been waiting for this evaluation for many years.

The evaluation examined whether the intentions by mammography program are met. The conclusions are the same as a panel of experts from the World Health Organization presented yesterday.

– Reached target

– We believe that the most reliable studies suggest a decreased mortality from breast cancer for invited women aged 50-69 years, followed for 79 years, 20-30 percent as a result of the entire mammography program. Depending on the eye of the beholder, so the reduction can be said to be close to the main goal of 30 percent, says the head of the steering committee, Professor Roar Johnsen at NTNU Research Council website.

– This is brilliant news. We now have established that mammography screening increases survival. We have waited a long time and it has to be good news for the politicians; Here we have a system that enables breast cancer is detected early in women, says Anne Lise Ryel.

She believes causes many women have discovered a cancer so early that it can be treated gently and without side effects or damage.

Hope more will screening out

– Many women are cured of cancer because it is detected early, she says.

Ryel hope documentation Research leads to more women make use of mammography screening.

– We wish that it initiated a pilot program among women up to 45 years in Oslo. And we hope we can expand the age range to include them up to 75 years, says Ryel.

Over Diagnosis

The evaluation examined a number of aspects of the mammography program and states that the likelihood of being diagnosed by a screening is five times as high as the probability to avoid dying from breast cancer.

Among the 10,000 women who invited 10 screening rounds will around 377 receive proven breast or precancerous breast cancer screening. Of these, around 27 women avoid dying from breast cancer because of early diagnosis and treatment, while around 142 women are expected to be diagnosed with the disease that would not be detected in the woman’s lifetime without screening.

Important to know about measures work

Arvid Hallen, CEO of RCN, is satisfied with the evaluation and management group’s work.

– This is a good example of a research-based evaluation. Research role has been to find the right researchers to do the job. It is important to obtain information on their effectiveness. And it is gratifying that it would have bet on here proves to have a positive gain.
