Sneak Peek Microsoft Lumia 950 – Tek.no

On October 6, Microsoft launched its new Lumia 550, 950- and 950 XL models. Now it’s just before the phones come in Norwegian shops, and Microsoft therefore invited to a press conference in Oslo to showcase both the new Lumia one and new Surface 4, and to brag a bit more of Windows 10.

We can not test specimens of Lumia 950 and 950 XL until next week, but at the press conference, we were able to klå bit on the new phones – and thus at least form a first impression of the two new flagships from Microsoft .

Powerful hardware

Both Lumia 950 and 950 XL comes with relatively hefty specifications. The processor in the Lumia 950 is a Snapdragon 808 from Qualcomm, while 950 XL uses a Snapdragon 810 chip. Both phones have 32GB of storage, which can be extended if you put your MicroSD card.

Should you be worried that Snapdragon chips would become too hot, so Microsoft could reassure us they had technology in place to deal with unwanted heat generation. Inside there is in fact a so-called “heat pipe” – a fluid-filled copper tubing which serves to conduct heat away from the processor.

And then of course both phones Windows 10.

We had no time to study the phones in detail during the press conference, so we concentrated on Lumia 950 – which we will focus further on in this sneak peek.

Super Screen

The phone has backed polycarbonate, the same type of plastic as Nokia and later Microsoft always used in its Lumia-top models. It may not look like luxury like aluminum chassis as some of its competitors have chosen – but we still think this is a pretty phone, and the build quality seems as good as we have come to expect from Microsoft.

The screen in Lumia 950 is 5.2 inches high (950 XL is 5.7 inches) and has a resolution of 1440 x 2560 points. The picture quality was really good, with bright colors – and thanks to the high resolution image is razor sharp.

We tried some different apps that were on the phone, and our impression is that the phone reacts very quickly – which we have become accustomed to with Windows mobiles. Windows 10 user interface, we have gradually gained some experience also in mobile, and user experience can really be summed up in one word: good! The menus are not much different than in previous versions of Windows Mobile, but the whole thing is a bit more streamlined and thoughtful – and Microsoft has of course also added some new features. You have included better setting menus, you’ve got enhanced Office apps, an improved Outlook client for email, and notification center has improved.

Iris scanning

A little nifty feature, is Windows Hello. This is Microsoft feature øyegjenkjenning. It shall be based on iris scanning, and we got to try out how it worked in practice.

We were not particularly optimistic, considering that Microsoft had chosen to place the press conference to a local with exceptionally poor lighting – but the phone managed fine scanning undersigned irises despite low light. As soon as his eyes were scanned, we could unlock your phone with a quick tap on the lock button first – and then hold the phone in front of your eyes.

We checked the phone did not seem to lock up the others, it did not. As soon as I held it in front of my own eyes, locked the phone up very quickly.

Øyeskanningen similar to the one we have previously tried the ZTE Blade S6 – but the Lumia 950, we needed one press less to start scan.

Use your phone as a PC with Continuum

One really exciting feature, Microsoft Continuum. We did not get an opportunity to test this feature myself, but got a little demo.

By plugging the phone into a small docking device connected to a computer screen, emerging Windows 10 up on the PC screen – in ” Computer size “. Thus, you can use your phone as a more or less full-featured Windows 10 PC. Albeit with ARM processor, so you can not run all of the programs you’re used to being able to run on your PC.

For the occasion chose Microsoft to connect the phone to its giant Surface Hub screen – 84-inch touch screen with built computer. But when they connected to the Lumia mobile became Surface Hub used only as a screen and it was the phone that was PC.

The screen resolution that came from the phone was changed so that it worked well on the big screen, and we received demonstrated that you could run both Office apps and phone apps such as SMS messaging app, and retrieve files from a USB memory stick that was plugged into the dock.

Usually costs Continuum dock no extras, but Microsoft said that they were going to run a campaign through January where you got with the docking of purchase when purchased phone.

20 megapixel camera

The main camera is 20 megapixels, like the current one including Lumia 930. However, according to Microsoft should the camera have been improved one part.

In addition to the improved optical image stabilization, the camera has also got a LED flash with three LEDs. These automatically adjust the color of the flash light and white balance to be as accurate as possible.

Another novelty with the camera is that it can record video in 4K. The camera should also have been better at taking pictures of moving objects.

We did not tested the camera so much, but could at least confirm that the camera has the same manual adjustment possibilities we know from earlier Lumia models . By pulling the camera button on the screen to the left pops up manual adjustments including shutter, aperture, ISO and over / under exposure.

Finally USB Type-C in a cell phone

Both of the two new Lumia 950 models come with USB Type-C connector that ladleinngang, like including the recently launched Nexus phones. That means you do not get used all the old charge your cables, but the advantage is that you can insert the plug any way.

Otherwise, Lumia 950 a pretty hefty battery generous 3000 mAh (XL is 3300 mAh). According to Microsoft should be able to recharge the battery to 50 percent in just half an hour.

Our sister website Digi.no were also present at the press conference:
– Windows 10 should be a seamless experience on everything from small to giant screens »

We’ll be back with a thorough test of the Lumia 950 and 950 XL as soon as we get the products in house.
