Facebook a step closer prestisjemål – provide internet to the world – Campaign

Facebook has long been reported that one of their visions is to increase the internet connection in the world using drone technology.

Early in 2015 the company started development a drone prototype that weighs as much as a small car, but has a wingspan larger than a Boeing 737.

Now, eighteen months after the project was initiated, Facebook has implemented the first successful test flight of Aquila – a drone powered by solar technology.

– internet access can provide opportunities, information and experiences that can change lives, but it is still 4 billion people who live without internet. This corresponds to 60 percent of the world population. 1.6 billion of those who do not have internet live today in places where there is not even mobile broadband access. Facebook develops new technology that Aquila to meet these challenges, writes Jay Parikh, Facebook’s engineering and infrastructure manager, in a blog post.

During test flights were Aquila in the air for 96 minutes. When the drone reached maximum height used it about 2000 watts, the equivalent to as much as a hair dryer or microwave use.

– We have been able to collect lots of useful data, and on the next tours coming Aquila to go faster, higher and further. Finally drone can fly between 60 000-90 000 feet and provide Internet access to people on the ground ..

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was also present during the test flight.

– I felt this was such an important milestone for the company, and to connect the world, that I just had to be there, said Zuckerberg to the Verge.

– It was a very emotional moment for everyone in the team who have spent two years of his life on this project, said Zuckerberg.
