It caused great excitement when the shipyard Simek Flekkefjord center under the Offshore Northern (ONS) in Stavanger on Wednesday launch news about the construction of a large stern trawler worth NOK 400 million. It is the company Sealord Group Ltd. Nelson in New Zealand who have ordered the new fishing boat.

The trawler, which will also get installed factory on board for the production of fishmeal and fish oil, are 82.9 meters long and 17 meters wide and getting cabin accommodates 44 persons on board. It’s design firm Skipsteknisk who designed the new vessel, to be delivered in March 2018.

Simek has built almost exclusively offshore vessels in the past decade, but has thus secured the second major contract for the construction of fishing boat . For Christmas will shipyard to provide a pelagic trawler to the company Antares Shetland.

– In the near future there will be mainly focus on the construction of fisheries related tonnage, says CEO Øyvind Iversen. He adds that the shipyard company sees many exciting opportunities for future contracts both in Norway and abroad. – In addition, we look at other segments, such as construction of ferries, says Iversen.

He also points out that the contract with the company in New Zealand may be the beginning of something more for shipping across the earth. – New Zealand has the coastal and sea on all sides, says Iversen.

Construction of fishing boats were from the start very foundation shipyard Simek. Eventually it was most offshore vessels. The yard has built three equal supply boats for the company GulfMark in Sandnes. The latest in this series is still docked in Flekkefjord, in circulation and will be transferred to the company until the next year.

Simek conducts shipbuilding in a slightly different way than most other shipyards employ. Hull will be built in Poland, in sections and taken home to Flekkefjord on dockyard own barge. In Flekkefjord, each section made into a hall and painted indoors in controlled climate, with temperatures between 18 and 19 degrees all year. Then join sections assembled into the finished hull.

– The method means that we can achieve high quality of the end product, says sales manager Gunnar Arnold Nordbø.

Simek has nearly 300 employees, including those who work in the Group’s electrical department. We are self-sufficient in most disciplines in their own company. When construction of the trawler to New Zealand is the most hectic, it becomes use for most of our employees for this project, says Nordbø.
