Norwegian researchers go into the territory of established giants when they address the artificial intelligence and big data. A new laboratory created.
– During the next 20 years will AI be the driving force in all processes, shaping all services and be integrated in most products, across industries and applications, says Bjørn- Taale Sandberg, research director at Telenor Group.
the new lab is a joint venture between Telenor, SINTEF and NTNU. Artificial intelligence is an area where Norwegian companies can take an international role, and the laboratory will therefore work in close collaboration with industry, research institutions, academia and entrepreneurs.
– For each day that passes, with each query in Google , purchases in the Amazon or “like” on Facebook, the AI to a handful of dominant players getting better and it becomes less interesting for us as consumers to try alternatives. There is a real risk that the 21st century’s fundamental technology will be dominated by a small number of large companies – if we do not take action. With the launch of Telenor’s “AI Lab” at NTNU and by supporting our entrepreneurs with the next generation “Internet of Things”, we contribute directly to take such a grip, says Sandberg.

the agreement has a cost totaling NOK 50 million, spread over five years.
laboratory at NTNU will include jobs for students and researchers, demo facilities and state of the art computers for research in the field. In addition, Telenor will provide an endowed professorship in the field, and fund more research.
Telenor will also provide access to data, especially from the new “Internet of Things” networks, which will be established in several large Norwegian cities. The activities in the laboratory will not be limited to Telenor related research, or the use of data from Telenor. The lab will be open for all research and education at NTNU relevant to artificial intelligence and machine learning.

– Now we get the opportunity to reinforce research and innovation in artificial intelligence and big data. Better equipment and more research will enable us to solve the projects and tasks that will provide Norwegian actors important competitive advantages in the international race to a digitized world. This collaboration will clearly accelerate and strengthen the realignment of Norway to a digital future, while it raises the level of education in areas where we need to be internationally excellent, says Rector Gunnar Bovim at NTNU.
– Digitization, big data , internet of things and artificial intelligence are strategic areas in which SINTEF has already considerable knowledge. Norwegian experts play a key role in the introduction of new digital skills that contribute to increased competitiveness for Norwegian industry. The creation of an “AI Lab” in cooperation with Telenor and NTNU Norway new opportunities to obtain the value of big data, says Alexandra Bech Gjørv, CEO of SINTEF.
