- 4G data is just the beginning – digi.no

FORNEBU (digi.no): The new technology director at Telenor Norway, Magnus Zetterberg, took the time to show off a new mobile voice platform that is being rolled out in the future, namely volts.

Swedish Zetterberg has a long history in the Swedish mobile industry, and has also visited Telenor’s Swedish branch. He began his new position in Telenor’s headquarters earlier this year.

In a presentation to the press took Telenor therefore the time to show off voice over LTE, which means traditional voice communication over the data-centric 4G network.

LTE is after all a purely data networks, and to perform common call with a 4G mobile must today switch to traditional 2G / 3G radio.

The point is to do speak to a pure packet managed service, and it is the Telenor working day.

The development of 4G technologies have gone much faster than Telenor has anticipated and counted, it sold so well that no 3G phones anymore, and the transition has happened in just two years, says Telenor mobile Bjørn Ivar Moen.

Benefits of Volta’s more: A very fast connection – preferably not more than two seconds ( today it could take over ten seconds or more before being connected together). It is better call quality and battery usage will decrease. Not least is the terminal regardless of 3G / 2G coverage to make or receive calls, and 4G data is available while the user is talking. It will say that it is part obvious advantages of the technology, which will be marked by users.

On the technical side, Telenor points that service leads to more efficient utilization of spectrum and frees frequency resources in 2G / 3G to 4G .

The technology also ensures that conversations seamlessly transferred to 2G / 3G if the user moves out of 4G coverage. This is after all still not full.

Telenor also look further ahead and speak warmly of how new services can easily be baked into the technology. Standardization is an important point – Telenor is very concerned that it all should work on existing SIM card and should be rolled out for most customers. One should make sure that you can talk across networks and operators, although the latter has not been resolved as of today.

The two Telenor peaks, Bjørn Ivar Moen and Magnus Zetterberg also used time demonstrating the technology in practice. Spectacular it was perhaps not – not entirely surprising consisted demonstration by two men who called to each other. We’ll just have to trust that voice quality over 4G was as good as the two argued – and we also demonstrated functioning calls between 3G and 4G. All this to work one hundred percent seamless deployments, says Telenor.

Most new phones from Samsung, Sony and Apple supports volt, iPhone 6 also supports LTE-A as Telenor is working to roll out beyond 2015 . All of the top five best-selling phones with Telenor handles technology. The decisive factor is hardware support in the phone chipsets, and most modern mobiles starting to get this.

Telenor can not say exactly when they activate Volta, they will be sure that the service works stable before they open it for all but the rollout will happen by 2015.
