University of Bergen lost the battle for prestige project – BergensAvisen

Researchers at the University of Bergen had great faith that they would receive the new research center on right-wing extremism. Monday came the tedious news that competitor in the capital drew the longest straw.

The research has been described as a prestige project. BA has previously written that the University of Bergen had great faith that they would receive the award.

They have teamed with the University of Oslo and Oslo and Akershus University College rockers tried to get center for research on right-wing extremism. Yesterday it was announced that the center will at the University of Oslo.

Disappointed

Prorektor Annelise Fimreite at the University of Bergen was one of those who really wanted to have the new research center to Bergen.

– We are of course sad because we have not received this center, she says to BA.

– Meanwhile, we congratulate Oslo environment that they have received it. It is an important center for Norway and the research community. We have a strong environment in Bergen as a researcher on right-wing extremism and counter terrorism. We now want to continue working with it within the framework University itself can provide, and hope that the environment in Oslo can cooperate with us, says Fimreite.

Fires reception center

Professor at the Police Academy, Tore Bjørgo, the center’s new leader. He believes it is time for the establishment of a research center on the site.

– Refugee flow has led to hate crimes, violence and arson fires at asylum centers in Sweden and Norway. In addition we have terror, which for more than a week ago struck Paris again. It was about jihadist terrorism, but we reckon that terror will also lead to more right-wing violence, says Bjørgo in a statement.

The center’s deputy becomes a lecturer in political science at the University of Oslo, Anders Ravik Jupskås.

In January this year the government made it clear that they wanted a stronger focus on research of the extreme right by creating a national research about theme.
