If your kids are discriminating, it’s your own fault – TV 2

Children’s taste is determined by the family and the food culture they grow up in. It shows a large scientific study from Denmark.

The same experiment is precisely conducted among 20,000 Norwegian students, but the tests started a few weeks after Denmark. The result of this study and the comparison between the Norwegian and Danish children will not be available until later.

Like the famous best

The project “Smag for life ‘, scientists have looked at food habits of 20,000 Danish children. The project is the largest of its kind. The kids got to taste and smell of a variety of foods, and were then asked to judge them. They had to, among other things smell coriander oil, and taste the rye bread, brown cheese powder and seaweed.

What was decisive for the kids was if they knew of flavors from before, and the study concludes: We like best that we know of. Genetic differences in our sensory apparatus, however, has little to say.

In the head of the project means the children who have tasted a lot of different have a greater chance of developing cuisine.

– If you want your kids to eat varied diet, so give them much different throughout childhood. But accepting the times kids give negative feedback on something, says Michael Bom Frost.

Earlier research has claimed to show a clear correlation between genes and how bitterness in food perceived. But the Danish researchers believe that their study shows that it is of crucial importance. This surprised them.

Differences between sexes

What is also interesting in the survey are differences in taste among boys and girls. While girls like better raspberries and raw vegetables than boys, they prefer to strørre degree tastes, sweet, salty, sharp and often it is a little different, like seaweed and dark rye bread. The boys like chili much better than girls. The researchers believe this reflects the focus that has been on chili eating lately, with the Danish Youtube favorite Chili Klaus in the lead, and believe this is the biggest hit among boys.

There is not much difference on the foods children in cities and in the Danish countryside prefer, with two exceptions: nori-seaweed, used in sushi and dark chocolate.

Schoolchildren of all ages tested, but 42 percent children in the Danish study goes in 4.-6. class.

How do we avoid that the child is picky?

Smag for Life project, with research and taste expert Anne Marie Olsen at the helm, presents various methods for making kids less discerning. Here are some of them:

Let your child try a type of food more than once.
You may want to let your child try on both a vegetable raw or cooked condition. However, it is wise to wait a few days before trying a food again. According to Anna Marie Olsen then there is a big difference between the number of times children must taste to foods – depending on age. While toddlers just need some fold exposure, have older children could have taste a food 15-20 times before it falls in taste.

Taste Sparring

This is to allow the child to taste a food that should learn to like, with which it already likes. If it’s broccoli to be introduced, it may for example be an opportunity to have some butter sauce on, if there is something your child likes. Melted cheese or ketchup are other flavors that many children appreciate.

Reward
“If you eat your dinner, you will have dessert” is familiar wording for most. The problem of reward is that the child then gets even higher preference for dessert and even lower for dinner, by making food into a commodity. Researchers encourages a verbal reward, as “so tough you are who dared to taste!”.

Let your child know that taste is something we can teach us
Do not accept too easily that a child does not like the type of food. Rather say: ‘Let’s see if you like carrots today! “But do not pressure your child.

Give children good role models
The surroundings have a lot to say about what the child eats. The taste will be affected by both adults and other children. If you are visited by a friend who loves a food type, parents can use this to create joy for this with their own children as well.

Let your children participate in cooking
Previous studies show that children who get to be dividing up fruit and vegetables will eat more of it.

Create a good eating situation
Turn iPad 10 minutes before it is time for food, so they are not torn out of anything they’re doing just when it should be eaten. Try to create a calm and pleasant eating environment. Olsen also believes that it must be allowed to play with their food to make it more exciting for the kids. This can make food more spnennede. One can for example say that brokkolibukettene are small trees that dinosaurs ate.

Use the TV to distract
Researchers do not agree on this, but Anne Marie Olsen believes that TV that there may be a move to trick in the children things they would not otherwise eat. For example, cut-up vegetables into small pieces and serve children a bowl of this while watching TV. Once they have your attention somewhere else, it can make sure they eat a little anyway.

Lur into vegetables in other foods
Lasagne, tacos, pizza and pasta sauce are places where it may be possible to trick in extra vegetables.
