From two to four hours

On Friday, he forward Public Health Report 2015. One of these is a new research project where about 30 secondary schools gets doubled the number of hours with physical education and physical activity from two to four hours.

– We want to get more knowledge about what is the right way to increase the time for physical activity in schools. We are increasing efforts here, because it is especially for secondary education we see that young people are less active, says Høie.

They will test different models, both to increase the total number of hours and solutions where one gets into more physical activity in other lessons. Høie points out that it will not go beyond the core subjects maths and English and Norwegian.

– When will you get results and thus make changes for everyone?

– The research project is three years and will commence the school year 2016-2017. Now the most important to find out what is the best model, then we’ll take it further after this. This is the biggest change that has been made in this field for many years, says Høie.

We know little today

Researchers will stand for the project, but who have not been determined. Education will be commissioned to ensure implementation and evaluation. Directorate of Health and National Center for food, health and physical activity, will be partners. The fledgling center at Bergen University College think it’s an exciting project.

– It is important to find out more about how to get to physical activity in schools, especially in secondary schools. We know little of today about why they become less active and how we can encourage further activity, says Gudbjorg Øen, head of the National Center for food, health and physical activity.

Strengthens outdoors

Another gist of Public Health White Paper to strengthen the outdoors and to cooperate closely with Open Air and NGOs.

– I’m worried that it’s created an impression that you have to jog or walk far to take care of your health. My message is that little is enough, says Høie.

In a lifetime will one that satisfies the government’s recommendation on 30 minutes moderate daily physical activity, on average expected to live 3.25 years longer than an inactive person. According to a report from the Health Directorate.

– For people who do not move much, even a small increase in activity provide significant health benefits in terms of reduced risk of disease, improve quality of life and increased disability, says Høie.

Norwegian Outdoors am glad that Høie focuses on outdoor activities to get up activity in the population.

– To get everyone to move 30 minutes a day, will be like finding oil again. It will create an enormous value. To pursue outdoor activities are also some of the cheapest but most powerful measures society, believes General in Norwegian Outdoors, Lasse Heimdal.

Pedestrian and bike paths

He calls for increased support for walking and cycling routes and several low threshold activities that do not require achievement, expensive equipment or expertise. Meanwhile he asks for better planning of the municipalities, by staying out of space for recreational areas and pedestrian and cycle paths when building out new residential areas.

– Then do not have to repair poor planning in the aftermath, said Heimdal.

Høie says Public Health White Paper came now, just to ensure good coordination between national policy and planning process at this point. He also promises better pedestrian and bicycle paths.

– In the budget adopted in years, was allocated more money for pedestrian and bicycle paths, says Høie.

Other public health measures from the government:

• Will support NGO efforts to prevent loneliness and mobilize joint efforts in this area.

• Will, in cooperation with KS, initiate work to establish a program for public health in the municipalities. The program will emphasize mental health and substance abuse.

• Will continue and strengthen cooperation with the food industry to make everyday food healthier. Keyhole products must also be healthier, with less salt, sugar and saturated fat, and more fiber.

• Will present a strategy for a modern older policies autumn 2015. Older persons should have the opportunity to participate in all areas, both in work and society.
