Derailed by poor snow plow – NRK

It was the 9th of February 2015 a freight train derailed at Bergensbanen by Grytås between Haugastøl and Tunga. On the railway line had started to build up a snowdrift, and the train derailed when it drove through drifts.

About 60 hours it took before Jernbaneverket had removed the freight train and railway line could be opened to normal traffic .

Poor suitable equipment

Now, a year after, the Accident Investigation Board (AIBN) finished its report after derailment.

the report did not train a good enough snowplow to cope with the wintry conditions. Freight train pulled by a new locomotive type.

– We are not looking for scapegoats, says Director Kurt Olsen in the Accident.

– This was a locomotive which was being tested in Norway. It has a slightly different kind of outfitting of snowplow than the other locomotives that usually operates the area, says Director Kurt Olsen in SHT.

AIBN notes that plow placement and design had weaknesses that were revealed on beforehand.

– it can pack tightly with snow under the front of the locomotive, which in this case led to the track, says Olsen.

recommends better risk assessment

SHT now comes with a recommendation to the Norwegian railway Inspectorate. They ask that the companies that run in the area make a risk assessment when inserted new material.

– We hope that the knowledge that has built up over time, being taken care of and disseminated around to all operating trains. The locomotives must be equipped in a way that makes them better suited to operate alpine stretch, says Olsen.

So this equipment was too bad?

– We can not say it too bad, because it is used in other countries that also have snow. But it has some different characteristics than the equipment commonly used in the area.
