Less cod, more saithe and haddock – Sunnmørsposten

It is clear Friday after The ICES (ICES) has presented its recommendations for 2016. The cod quota in the Barents Sea should be 805 000 tonnes, according to ICES. This is a decline of ten percent. The condition of the Norwegian Arctic cod is good and stable, believes ICES.

– The annual and catch level is expected to stabilize around the 2016 level in coming years. Fishing mortality was in 2014 over the precautionary level, but within the limits it is estimated that it will be when harvesting rule followed. Harvesting rule is evaluated and found to be in line with the precautionary principle, according to a press release from the Marine Research (IMR).

IMR supports the advice from ICES, but stresses that the calculations are uncertain.

– There is no doubt that the current stock is in good condition, but the exact level is uncertain because of uncertainties in both catch and research data, says HI.

ICES recommends a saithe north of 62 degree at 140,000 tons, an increase of 18,000 tons. Haddock quota makes a solid jump and being recommended to 223,000 tons. The researchers used a new calculation method, thus spawning stock sharply revised upwards.
