Traditionally, the ferries brought in the most contact injuries. Ferries are a number of arrivals and departures from the wharf, thus also the risk of clashes higher. In a press release writing NMD that they have actively worked against the industry for several years to reduce the number of accidents. Yet it seems to have produced results in the form of a marked decline.
The number of collisions with wharves, bridges and other has dropped from 33 incidents in the first half of last year to 20 incidents in the first half of this year . Meanwhile decreases the number of collisions between vessels from 19 to 12 in the two periods.
Shipowners’ liability
– NMD welcomes the downturn, and will follow the trend ahead to see if it holds up, says Alf Tore Sørheim, Assistant Director of Subdivision for inspection and readiness in NMD.
– There are, however, ship owners’ responsibility to follow up on the prevention of contact damage. Their focus on a good safety management system, good education and good maintenance is important to see a further improvement in the numbers.
Sørheim explains that NMD will follow up this work in their supervision.
– We have prioritized supervision of the vessels that have been involved in such clashes earlier to reduce the possibility of repetition. It also worked on information and safety messages to the industry to prevent collisions with the dock.

Four people lost their lives in fatal accidents on commercial vessels in the first half of 2016, a decrease of one person against the same period in 2015. All the four died as a result of a fall, including three in falling into the sea and one person in the case on board the vessel.
