Polar vessel is designed in Norway, will be packed with Norwegian equipment and getting Bergen … – Tu.no

Rolls-Royce has designed the 128 meters long and 23.5 meters wide research vessel currently under construction at the historic Cammell Laird shipyard in Liverpool.

The yard and design was chosen in October last year, while equipment providers determined these days.

Six and nine cylinders

This week it was announced that Rolls-Royce in addition to supply four engines of the new B33: 45-type, two with nine cylinders and two six-cylinder. In addition, Rolls-Royce deliver CCP propellers (controllable pitch) with a diameter of 4.5 meters, Unified Bridge (integrated bridge solution), automation and control system.

There are also Norwegian deck machinery to put out , control and retrieve research equipment, either through a well (moon pool) or above.

the ship should be able to tow acoustic and other equipment with a 12,000-meter line and it should be possible to send equipment and take seabed samples down to 9,000 meters deep.

meter Thick ice

the diesel-electric propulsion machinery and propellers are designed to be as low noise as possible not to disturb the animals and instruments during data collection.

ship design UT 851 PRV (Polar Research vessel) and Polar Class 4, the ship should take through 1 meter thick ice in 3 knots. Transit speed is 13 knots.

According to the requirements specification from the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), the ship should have the capacity to be self-sufficient in fuel and supplies on traveling up to 19,000 nautical mil, accommodates up to 90 people on board, payload capacity and hangar for the helicopter. It should also be more advanced research laboratories on board.

boaty McBoatface?

Research Ship name should be settled through reconciliation on social media. RSS David Attenborough was a good distance down the list last week. Nonsense name “boaty McBoatface” received the highest number of votes.

Last week took the British government affair and appealed to “people’s voice”. A few days before Sir David Attenborough celebrated his 90th birthday was ship name determined.

“boaty McBoatface” will still be on board. A remote-controlled submarine, ROV, will carry people’s name.

Rolls-Royce has also designed the Norwegian research ship “Crown Prince”, which is being built in Italy.
