They appear periodically: Images of horses coming down from the high jump, with necks and ankles bent in directions they are not made to be bent in:

But if you think this is only a phenomenon of the old days, you’d be wrong. These pictures are from the opening day of the Grand National weekend in 2016 – in other words this week:

46 dead

Four horses have already lost their lives at Aintree circuit this week. They perished in the two ramp races, held on the same path as the Grand National.

There are animal rights people to race.

– The Grand National is the symbol of everything that is wrong with horse racing, says Dene Stan Sall in Animal Aid to Huffington Post.

Since 2000, 46 horses died in the Grand National weekend, 11 of them in the Grand National race on Saturday, according to the website .

– it is simply evil

Grand National is not the only race that requires life. But the extra high hurdles and the challenging trail arouses resentment. Spectacular television pictures being prioritized over safety, according to critics.

40 horses jostle while jockeys use the whip to spur them to come.

– TV promotes these falls. It is grotesque that this exists today. It is simply evil, says Stan Sall in Animal Aid.

Have changed the path somewhat

In the period from 2005 to 2013 died horses every year during the event. It helped a little that the organizers changed the path in 2013, and since it has no died in the Grand National. But in the run races, where riders and horses are less experienced, have the deaths continue.

The organizers feel they have done enough for safety. They have partly made several changes in the hedges, and points out constantly that most horses survive.

– You can not eliminate all risk from any sport, but we have made significant changes here at Aintree. We have also changed the core of all hedges, and hundreds of horses have come safely through the years, says director John Baker to BreakingNews.ie after the latest deaths.

Comparable to bullfighting

But it is not just the death toll that evokes criticism. Many horses are seriously injured, and statements from some jockeys that “horses can be replaced” has aroused resentment.

According to the Independent, several of the horses simply shot after they finish as racehorses.

– Grand National is Britain’s answer to bullfighting. We must stop this evil industry once and for all, writes Mimi Bekhechi in animal rights organization PETA Independent.

According Conversation comes around 600 million people to follow the course.
