– Owners of new processors from AMD, Intel or QualComm must use Windows 10
Microsoft has posted a post on the blog “Windows Experience Blog” in the post they write that from and with Skylake there will be changes in how they support previous versions of the OS.
An OS to collect all
Intel Kabys Lake, AMD Bristol Ridge, and Qualcomm 8996 will only be supported on Windows 10, Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 will not receive support for these architectures. The reason for this says Microsoft is to retain the focus on deep integration between new processors and Windows 10.
Windows 7 and 8.1
To support its installation base on these versions they will continue to receive updates for security, stability and compatibility. Windows 7 is now in extended support, and will continue to be supported out January 14, 2020 on the previous generation of processors. Windows 8.1 on their side will receive the same support until 13 January 2023.
But support for Skylakes is thus limited to selected units, and a HCL (Hardware compatability List) will come in course of a week, write Microsoft in the post.
Until 2017
Support for Windows 7 / 8.1 for selected devices running on Skylakes will last until 17 July 2017, and will then quits . These 18 months, according to Microsoft give users and companies enough time to move over to Windows 10.
From 2017 to 2020/23 will Windows 7 / 8.1 continue to receive critical updates if they are not causing problems with compatibility other devices.
Briefly
Easier explained then Windows 10 for all new architectures and Windows 7 / 8.1 for the older architectures they were designed for. Or for devices on the upcoming kompatiblitetslisten.
ITavisen following the case and update you with the list when it becomes available.
