To create artistic faculty in Bergen – Bergens Tidende

Bergen National Academy of the Arts (the Academy) and the University of Bergen (UiB) is in favor of the merger on 1 January 2017.

Previously the board at the college advocated the same. They now want to establish an arts faculty at the university, based on current activity at the Academy and the Grieg Academy, writes Ministry on its website.

– the Academy and the University of Bergen has good prospects for creating a powerhouse of artistic education, development and research. A merger would make good academic communities even better, says Minister Torbjørn Røe Isaksen (H).

Gerd Tinglum, principal at Bergen National Academy of the Arts, said in a statement that the new artistic faculty will give them larger muscles to strengthen their professional work and make them better equipped to meet future challenges.

– we have fought too long to get in place an artistic PhD program and now we see an opportunity to achieve this. Such a program would give us a position that opens to seek funds from the EU and be motivating for the best candidates. This will strengthen our research, says Tinglum.

– The final decision on the merger taken by the King, and we will quickly begin preparations for this, says Minister Røe Isaksen.
